Slotkin Leads 45 Senate Democrats in Demanding Answers on Iran War Costs

Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan is leading 45 Senate Democrats and Democratic-aligned senators in demanding that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth provide Congress with a detailed accounting of the costs of the ongoing Iran war.

In their September 17 letter, the senators pointed to 18 American servicemembers killed and more than 820 wounded, while also raising concerns about the financial burden on American families. They said higher gas and diesel prices had added about $100 billion in costs and estimated another $60 billion in increased expenses for groceries, mortgages and air travel.

The lawmakers are asking the Pentagon for detailed information on military operations, damage to equipment and facilities, the administration’s $67 billion supplemental funding request, and how remaining defense funds would be spent.

Separately, the Associated Press reported that the Pentagon’s latest estimate puts the direct cost of the Iran war at $43.6 billion as of September 3, while noting that the broader economic effects are difficult to measure.

The senators argue that Congress needs greater transparency to properly oversee the war and its costs. Hegseth and the Pentagon have also faced scrutiny over casualty reporting, following a Washington Post report that alleged more U.S. military fatalities than publicly listed; Hegseth denied that report.

The debate now centers on how much information the Pentagon should provide Congress and the public about the war’s human and financial costs.
