Andy Reid says the pop star “kicks him in the butt” after Kelce’s hot start in Year 14.
Kansas City is 2–0. Travis Kelce looks younger than he has in two seasons. And on Monday, Chiefs coach Andy Reid pointed across the locker room and, half-joking, toward Taylor Swift.
The comments came a day after Kansas City’s 33–30 overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts, a game in which Kelce scored his first touchdown of 2026 and later learned he had added another line to a record book that already needed extra paper. Through two weeks the tight end has 12 catches for 172 yards and that score. NFL Next Gen Stats has his average route speed at 11.56 mph, his fastest mark since 2022. The questions that followed him out of July have gone quiet. Reid explained why.

“Everybody questioned, with the wedding and all that, would he be out of shape and honeymooning the whole time,” Reid told reporters, remarks first highlighted by KSHB 41. “But he works his rear end off. And I think Taylor, you’re putting on four-hour shows; you’ve gotta work hard, too. I’m sure she kicks him in the butt a little bit there, too.”
Reid was not inventing a narrative. He was at the wedding. On July 3, Kelce and Swift were married at Madison Square Garden in a ceremony officiated by Adam Sandler. Austin Swift stood as man of honor. Jason Kelce was best man. Guests included Gigi Hadid, Tom Cruise, Hugh Grant, Selena Gomez and a long list of teammates. Reid had already been fitted for a suit in Kansas City. The coach who once joked about cutting cheeseburgers to fit a tuxedo showed up. Three weeks later Kelce reported to training camp and did not miss a practice.
The skepticism was real. Kelce is 36. Production had dipped. A summer built around the most public wedding in American sports-and-pop culture looked, to some, like a soft landing into Year 14. Reid’s answer was the opposite. Swift’s Eras Tour shows ran close to four hours. The standard in that house, the coach suggested, is work. Kelce put it in his own words after the Colts game: “It’s not as much about the shape that I look like I’m in. It’s about the grit that I have and the heart that I have to get that ball north.”
Sunday night at Arrowhead gave the week its image. Swift sat in a suite in a red Chiefs tank with her parents, Scott and Andrea Swift, and Kelce’s mother, Donna. When Kelce caught a 13-yard touchdown from Patrick Mahomes in the first quarter, cameras found her on her feet. She pointed at her wedding ring and yelled, “That’s my husband.” The clip moved faster than the extra point. It was the second Chiefs game she has attended this season. The first was the opener against Denver, with Tom Cruise in the box. The second was the first time the league heard her use the new word out loud.

Reid has been careful not to turn a marriage into a scheme. He also credited Kelce’s pride in the skill group around him — a younger receiving room that, the coach said, gives the veteran “an extra challenge” to keep up. “Trav worked his tail off. That’s the bottom line,” Reid said. The surrounding cast helps. The four-hour standard at home does not hurt.

Kansas City now prepares for its first road trip of the season, to Miami on Sunday. The football question is unchanged: Can a 2–0 team that just survived overtime keep this version of No. 87? The cultural question is the one Reid answered without flinching. The wedding did not soften Kelce. If the coach is right, the person in the suite is part of why he looks this sharp.
