The Indiana Fever’s Season Is Over — So What’s Next for Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham and the Team?
The Indiana Fever’s 2026 season has officially come to an end.
Indiana was eliminated by the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in a winner-take-all Game 3, falling 94–83 on October 1. A’ja Wilson led Las Vegas with 36 points and 10 rebounds, while Caitlin Clark finished with 18 points as the Fever’s playoff run ended in the opening round.
But with the season now over, attention immediately turns toward what comes next for one of the WNBA’s most closely watched teams.
Caitlin Clark enters a crucial offseason
For Clark, the elimination marks the end of her third WNBA season.
The Fever star had a strong regular season, averaging 22.3 points, 8.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game, according to postseason reporting. In the three-game playoff series against Las Vegas, she averaged 20.0 points, 9.7 assists and 4.0 rebounds.
Clark remains one of the central pieces of Indiana’s future, and the next major storyline surrounding her will be her contract situation.
Her current deal is approaching a point where the Fever will have to address a potential extension, making Clark’s future contract one of the biggest offseason stories around the franchise.
For now, however, Clark’s immediate priority is likely rest and preparation for another season.
Sophie Cunningham faces a major decision
Cunningham’s situation is different.
The veteran guard signed a one-year, $665,000 contract with Indiana for the 2026 season after recovering from an MCL injury. She went on to appear in 43 regular-season games, averaging 7.9 points per game while shooting 41.9% from three-point range.
Now, Cunningham is an unrestricted free agent.
That means Indiana will have to decide whether it can reach a new agreement with her, while Cunningham will have the opportunity to consider other options around the league.
Fever general manager Amber Cox has indicated that Indiana plans to talk with Cunningham about potentially bringing her back.
So her future in Indiana is not settled yet.
Kelsey Mitchell is another major question
Cunningham isn’t the only Fever player facing an uncertain offseason.
Kelsey Mitchell, one of Indiana’s most important offensive players, is also headed toward free agency.
Mitchell had a standout regular season and was even part of the MVP conversation, although she struggled during the three-game playoff series against Las Vegas.
Whether Indiana can keep both Mitchell and Cunningham could become one of the biggest roster questions of the offseason.
Aliyah Boston and the young core remain
The Fever do have some stability.
Clark, Aliyah Boston and Lexie Hull are among the players expected to remain important pieces of the team’s future, giving Indiana a foundation to build around.
Boston finished the decisive playoff game with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Indiana also continues to develop its younger players.
The Fever finished the regular season 28–16 and earned the No. 6 seed, but another first-round exit means the organization will have to evaluate what is needed to take the next step.
Coaching and roster decisions await
The offseason will not simply be about players.
Indiana will also have to evaluate its coaching situation and determine whether the current roster construction is capable of competing deeper into the playoffs.
The Fever have now been eliminated by Las Vegas in the first round in consecutive seasons, making improvement a major priority heading into 2027.
The organization has several months to decide which players to retain, which positions need reinforcement and how aggressively to build around Clark.
The next chapter begins now
The Fever may be out of the playoffs, but the offseason could be almost as important as the postseason itself.
Clark remains the centerpiece. Boston and the young core provide continuity. Mitchell and Cunningham face important contract decisions. And the front office must determine what additions are needed to turn Indiana from a playoff team into a genuine championship contender.
For Fever fans, the biggest question is simple:
What moves should Indiana make this offseason to finally take the next step around Caitlin Clark?
