WHO KNEW: Trump’s Iran Ceasefire Is Already Falling Apart Before Talks Even Begin
The fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran is showing cracks less than 48 hours after it was announced, as both sides head into high-stakes weekend negotiations in Islamabad with massive disagreements still unresolved and a two-week clock ticking.
Vice President JD Vance will lead the U.S. delegation to Pakistan on Saturday, joined by Trump envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. But the team is walking into a minefield. Iran’s Parliament speaker is already claiming three provisions of what he called a 10-point “agreed framework” have been violated, including a halt to Israeli strikes on Hezbollah in Lebanon. The Trump administration says that was never part of the deal.
The core sticking point has not moved an inch. Iran insists it has the sovereign right to enrich uranium. Trump’s team says zero enrichment is non-negotiable. That gap alone could sink any meaningful agreement before talks even get off the ground.
Experts are sounding the alarm. Former Biden Iran envoy Robert Malley called the ceasefire “filled with ambiguities” and warned that “talks are starting on very weak grounds.” Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz remains militarized, with little sign Iran is moving to restore commercial shipping through the mine-laden waterway as promised.
Career diplomats who speak Farsi and have spent years negotiating with Tehran have been largely cut out of the process. Former senior State Department official Nicholas Burns called their exclusion from earlier talks “diplomatic malpractice” and urged the Trump team to bring them back in immediately.
With midterm elections approaching, markets rattled, and energy prices climbing, Trump is under real pressure to produce something. Iran knows it. And seasoned analysts say Tehran’s strategy will be to drag out negotiations while demanding concessions Trump simply cannot deliver.
