Becerra Widens Lead Over Hilton in California Governor’s Race

Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra has widened his lead over Republican Steve Hilton in California’s governor’s race, according to a new statewide poll released this week.

The Public Policy Institute of California survey, conducted September 4–10 among 1,103 likely voters, found Becerra leading Hilton 60% to 38% — a 22-point margin.

The latest figures represent an increase from an August Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies/Los Angeles Times poll, which had Becerra ahead 55% to 37%.

The candidates are competing to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is unable to seek another term. The election is scheduled for November 3.

Independent voters could be crucial

The PPIC poll found strong support for both candidates within their respective party bases: 93% of Democrats backed Becerra, while 92% of Republicans supported Hilton.

Among independent voters, Becerra led Hilton 57% to 38%, according to the survey.

Affordability is also emerging as a major issue. About 65% of likely voters said candidates’ positions on affordability would be very important when deciding how to vote.

Hilton has made California’s cost of living, taxes and regulations central themes of his campaign. Becerra, meanwhile, has emphasized healthcare, affordability and his record as California attorney general and former U.S. Health and Human Services secretary.

Hilton has disputed the latest polling, arguing that it does not accurately reflect Republican turnout and saying Californians are seeking political change.

With Election Day approaching, the poll provides a snapshot of the race rather than a prediction of the final result. Campaigning, debates, advertising and voter turnout could all affect the contest before November 3.
