Could Pete Hegseth Become the First Defense Secretary to Go to Prison?

Pete Hegseth is facing one of the most serious political challenges of his tenure — but prison is far from a certainty.

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie has launched an effort to impeach Hegseth, accusing the defense secretary of violating congressional war powers during the ongoing U.S. conflict with Iran. Massie has also raised other allegations involving military operations and the use of Hegseth’s office.

The impeachment push has intensified scrutiny of Hegseth as questions grow in Congress over the administration’s military decisions. However, impeachment and imprisonment are two very different legal processes. An impeachment effort by itself does not mean Hegseth faces a criminal conviction or prison sentence.

The Pentagon has defended Hegseth and rejected the accusations, with a spokesperson saying the department remains behind the secretary.

For now, the key question is whether Congress will pursue disciplinary action and whether any of the allegations could eventually lead to separate criminal proceedings.
