Recent history suggests we’ll be watching the AFC West winner and at least one playoff participant when the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos face off in the season opener on “Monday Night Football.”
Either the Chiefs or Broncos have won the division for the past 16 seasons, with Denver halting Kansas City’s nine-year streak of division championships last year.
During that stretch, the Chiefs have played in five Super Bowls, winning three; the Broncos in two, winning one.
The game matches quarterbacks coming off injury. Patrick Mahomes missed the final three games of 2025 after suffering a torn ACL and MCL. Although he didn’t play in a preseason game, signs point to Mahomes returning for the opener.
The Broncos’ Bo Nix suffered a broken ankle in the Divisional Round playoff game and missed the AFC Championship Game loss the next week. Nix played in the preseason.
The Chiefs open the regular season against the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football” at Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 14.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN and ABC (Channel 9 in Kansas City). Radio coverage of the game will be on KFNZ (96.5 FM) in KC and KNSS (98.7 FM) in the Wichita area.
The Chiefs are a 2 1/2-point favorite, with over/under set at 43 1/2 according to FanDuel.
