House Recess Delays Hegseth Impeachment Push
House Speaker Mike Johnson abruptly ended the House’s legislative session one day early, sending lawmakers home for a seven-week recess ahead of the November midterm elections. The decision came just as Republican Rep. Thomas Massie introduced a resolution seeking to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Massie’s resolution contains eight articles of impeachment and focuses largely on Hegseth’s handling of U.S. military operations involving Iran. Because the resolution was privileged, it created a deadline for House leaders to address it. By ending the session early, consideration was pushed until lawmakers return after the elections.
Johnson rejected the suggestion that the recess was designed to protect Hegseth, calling Massie’s impeachment effort a “publicity stunt.” Johnson said the House had completed its work and that members needed to return to their districts ahead of the elections.
Massie, however, argued that the timing was significant and criticized Johnson for cutting short the House calendar while major issues remained unresolved.
The dispute has opened another divide within the Republican-controlled House over congressional oversight, military policy and the role of the House in holding administration officials accountable. The impeachment resolution is now expected to be addressed when lawmakers return.
