Lindsey Graham and the Long-Running Rumors About His Sexuality

For years, questions and rumors about former South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham’s sexuality have circulated in political circles, social media and popular culture.

But separating documented facts from speculation is important.

Graham repeatedly denied that he was gay during his lifetime. In a 2010 interview discussed by LGBTQ Nation, he directly rejected the claim, saying, “I ain’t gay.” He also discussed his decision to remain single, saying that being unmarried was a personal choice and that he did not believe he should have to explain it.

The rumors nevertheless continued.

Various politicians, celebrities and commentators have publicly joked or speculated about Graham’s sexuality over the years. Some of those comments were connected to criticism of his political positions on LGBTQ+ issues. Others relied on anonymous allegations or internet rumors.

One particularly widely circulated story involved claims that Graham had hired male sex workers. Fact-checking coverage has found that these allegations were not independently established. One sensational story involving alleged physical details was later acknowledged by its author as fabricated.

In another instance, activist Laura Loomer claimed during a deposition that she had been told by people connected to President Donald Trump’s circle that Graham was gay. That was an allegation by Loomer, rather than independent evidence establishing Graham’s sexual orientation.

Graham himself continued to reject the rumors publicly. In 2018, after comedian Chelsea Handler made a public insinuation about his sexuality, Graham responded that, “To the extent that it matters, I’m not gay.”

The issue has also raised a broader question about the treatment of public figures who are unmarried or who do not publicly discuss their romantic lives. Graham has never publicly identified himself as gay, and being unmarried or lacking a publicly known partner does not establish someone’s sexual orientation.

Ultimately, the available public record does not provide a reliable basis for independently determining Graham’s private sexual orientation. What can be documented is that the rumors persisted for decades, that numerous public figures repeated or joked about them, and that Graham repeatedly denied them.

The controversy therefore remains a story about rumors, public statements and political scrutiny, rather than a confirmed revelation about Graham’s private life.
