Republican backlash grows over Don Jr.’s billionaire-funded Bahamas wedding celebrations

A controversy surrounding Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebrations in the Bahamas has drawn criticism from several Republican senators after reports that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev helped finance parts of the festivities.

The issue centers on a reported $250,000 gift connected to celebrations held after Trump Jr.’s May wedding to Bettina Anderson. According to reporting cited by Threadline News and ProPublica, Kremlev, who heads the International Boxing Association and has been described as having close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses connected to the Bahamas events.

Republican senators speak out

The controversy has produced an unusual wave of criticism from Republicans.

Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana addressed the matter on CBS’s Face the Nation on September 20. Cassidy said repayment of the money makes a difference, but argued that accepting such a large gift from someone with Kremlin ties created a serious appearance problem because Trump Jr. is the president’s son.

Cassidy said he was glad the money had reportedly been repaid but added that the arrangement “shouldn’t have been done in the first place.”

Sen. John Curtis of Utah was even more direct, describing the arrangement as corruption and saying it “just stinks.” Curtis argued that the matter was significant because of the relationship between the donor and Trump’s family.

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis also criticized the arrangement, calling the reported gift “beyond bad.”

Trump says his son repaid the money

President Donald Trump has said that Trump Jr. reimbursed Kremlev.

Trump said his son told him he had paid the businessman back after the controversy emerged. A person familiar with the matter also told Reuters that reimbursement was planned. However, the exact amount and details of the repayment have not been publicly established in the reporting.

Cassidy said on Sunday that he would like the repayment to be independently verified.

What the couple says

Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump have rejected the suggestion that the gift was connected to politics or wrongdoing.

In a statement posted by Bettina, the couple said Kremlev was a friend who generously hosted two nights of celebrations after their wedding. They characterized the contribution as a personal wedding gift and argued that the event was being portrayed politically because of Kremlev’s background and connections.

Kremlev’s press office has also said that he has known Trump Jr. for years and that he has not discussed political matters with his American friends and acquaintances.

Congressional questions

The controversy has also moved beyond Republican criticism.

House Democrats have requested records concerning the payments and Trump Jr.’s relationship with Kremlev. Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, sought communications and records concerning foreign nationals paying for wedding-related expenses.

Rep. Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, separately asked the FBI whether it was aware of Kremlev’s relationship with Trump Jr. and whether there were potential counterintelligence concerns.

The FBI director, Kash Patel, previously said the bureau would examine information that came to its attention.

Why the story is attracting attention

The controversy is not simply about the size of the reported gift. Critics are focused on who provided the money, the donor’s reported connections to Russia, and Trump Jr.’s proximity to the president and to companies involved in government contracts.
