Trump’s Greenland Pact Draws Alaska Comparison From Security Expert

A newly announced agreement between the United States, Denmark and Greenland is being described by one security expert as a major strategic development for Washington.

Retired U.S. Marine Col. Grant Newsham called the deal “a big deal” and compared its potential significance to the 1867 U.S. purchase of Alaska from Russia. His argument is that, while the United States is not buying Greenland, the agreement would strengthen Washington’s long-term security position in the strategically important Arctic territory.

Under the emerging agreement, the U.S. would gain expanded security responsibilities in Greenland, while Denmark and Greenland would retain sovereignty. The deal is also intended to prevent Russia and China from establishing military bases or gaining certain strategic investments on the island.

Trump has said the agreement gives the United States permanent control over Greenland’s security needs and that Washington will begin the process of expanding its military presence there. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the agreement as a historic achievement for American security in the Arctic.

However, the agreement is not yet fully in force. It still requires formal signatures and parliamentary procedures in Denmark and Greenland. The arrangement also differs fundamentally from the Alaska Purchase because Greenland is remaining under Danish sovereignty.

The development marks a significant shift from the earlier dispute over Trump’s calls for the United States to acquire Greenland. The new framework instead focuses on expanding American security access while formally recognizing Greenland and Denmark’s territorial sovereignty.
