Supreme Court Blocks Trump-Backed Missouri Congressional Map

The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked Missouri from using a new congressional map backed by President Donald Trump and designed to give Republicans an advantage in the upcoming November midterm elections.

The decision is a setback for Republicans as they fight to maintain their narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.

What happened?

Missouri Republicans redrew the state’s congressional districts in an effort to strengthen the party’s position ahead of the 2026 midterms.

The new map was designed to give Republicans a better chance of winning seven of Missouri’s eight House seats, including by reshaping the Kansas City-area district held by Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver.

But opponents challenged the map and argued that it should not be used without approval from Missouri voters.

The Missouri Supreme Court previously ruled that the new map could not be used for the November election unless voters approved it through a referendum.

The dispute then moved through the federal courts before reaching the U.S. Supreme Court.
