Transfer: Ignore Chelsea, come play UCL football for Man Utd – Rio Ferdinand tells ex-teammate
According to a report by Daily Post on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has called on former teammate Danny Welbeck to reject Chelsea’s interest and complete a surprise return to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window.
Ferdinand’s comments followed reports linking Chelsea with a move for the experienced Brighton striker as the Blues continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
Welbeck, now 35, is said to have held advanced discussions with Chelsea, who are looking to add proven Premier League experience to Xabi Alonso’s attacking options.
The former Manchester United academy product enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, scoring 13 Premier League goals for Brighton and showing he remains an effective forward.
With only one year left on his current contract, Welbeck is believed to be available for a transfer this summer, and Chelsea are reportedly eager to secure his signature.
Despite the growing interest from Stamford Bridge, Ferdinand believes the striker should choose a return to Manchester United instead.
Responding to the transfer speculation on X, Ferdinand posted: “Welbs…. Ignore plus come back home! Champions League football next season in Manchester.”
His message was a direct appeal for Welbeck to turn down Chelsea and return to the club where he began his professional career.
