Ferdinand’s comments followed reports linking Chelsea with a move for the experienced Brighton striker as the Blues continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

Welbeck, now 35, is said to have held advanced discussions with Chelsea, who are looking to add proven Premier League experience to Xabi Alonso’s attacking options.

The former Manchester United academy product enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, scoring 13 Premier League goals for Brighton and showing he remains an effective forward.
