Voters Question Trump’s $5,000 Check Promise as Congress Faces Major Hurdles

Published

on

President Donald Trump’s proposal to give Americans a $5,000 payment is facing growing skepticism from voters and lawmakers, with questions mounting over whether the plan could actually make it through Congress.

Trump has pledged the payment to American adults if Republicans retain control of Congress in the November midterm elections. The proposal, which Trump has described as a dividend, could cost more than $1.2 trillion if payments were made to roughly 245 million adult U.S. citizens.

Some voters interviewed about the proposal have dismissed it as a publicity stunt or questioned whether the promise can realistically be fulfilled. The skepticism comes as lawmakers themselves remain divided over how the payments would be financed.

There is also a constitutional hurdle. Federal spending generally requires congressional authorization, and Trump has suggested that Congress may not need to approve the payments, without publicly explaining how the administration could distribute the money without legislative action.

Republican lawmakers have also expressed reservations. Senate Republicans have questioned the plan’s funding, while House Speaker Mike Johnson has said that building congressional support would take time. Sen. John Kennedy has said he would not support borrowing $1.2 trillion to finance the checks without knowing how they would be paid for.

The proposal has therefore become more than a question of whether Americans would receive $5,000. It has raised broader debates over government spending, inflation, the national debt and the role of Congress in approving federal payments.

For now, the promised checks remain a proposal rather than an approved federal program, and significant legislative and financial questions remain unresolved.

🚧“THEY WANTED AN 8-FOOT WALL… THE VILLAGE SAID NO” — The entire lakeside town froze when Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s plan for a high privacy fence around their $5.35 million Bratenahl mansion was shot down by village planners. In a rare public snag for the newlyweds, the Architectural Review Board cited code that caps lakefront fences at 2½ feet unless they’re mostly see-through — forcing the couple to settle for a shorter barrier that doesn’t even enclose the whole property.
