Major TV Networks Refuse to Replace CNN as White House Pool Camera Crew

Published

A major confrontation between the Trump administration and the U.S. news media escalated Monday as the country’s largest television networks declined to replace CNN in the White House television pool.

ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, Fox News and CNN are part of the rotating pool responsible for providing shared video coverage of the president. CNN had been scheduled to handle the pool assignment, but the White House’s decision to block CNN from the premises left the network unable to carry out its role.

Instead of assigning another network to take CNN’s place, the pool decided there would be no replacement camera crew for Monday’s presidential pool coverage.

Fox News Washington bureau chief Bryan Boughton, who serves as the current TV pool chair, notified subscribers that the pool would not cover events designated for presidential pool coverage. Other types of coverage, including Congress and selected events, would continue as normal.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico take legal action

The development came as CNN, MS NOW and Politico announced that they were suing the Trump administration over their exclusion from the White House.

The three organizations argue that the administration violated their First Amendment rights and Fifth Amendment due-process protections by revoking their access after objecting to their reporting.

They are seeking a temporary restraining order in federal court in Washington, D.C., which could lead to an expedited hearing.

The organizations said the government should not determine what journalists report or publish.

Why the TV pool matters

The White House TV pool is designed to provide shared video coverage that can be distributed to television stations and other news organizations.

Because the networks rotate responsibility for the pool, removing one network can create a practical problem for the entire system.

In this case, CNN was scheduled to provide coverage during Trump’s trip connected to the United Nations General Assembly. With CNN unable to perform its assignment and the other networks declining to replace it, the White House TV pool was left without a replacement camera crew.

This does not mean Trump will receive no media coverage at all. Other reporters and news organizations can still cover the president, and non-TV-pool coverage continues. The immediate issue is the loss of the shared presidential TV pool feed.

A rare moment of cooperation

The dispute has produced an unusual show of cooperation among competing television networks.

A joint statement from Fox News Media, ABC News, CBS News, CNN and NBC News said the public has an important interest in receiving accurate and independent information about the government and argued that administrations should not restrict news organizations because they object to their reporting.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico, meanwhile, are pursuing their legal challenge in federal court.

The White House has defended its decision. Trump has described the affected organizations as “fake news” and has argued that the administration’s action was aimed at what he characterized as a national-security threat. Reuters reported that the administration has not provided evidence supporting that national-security claim.

The bigger question

The confrontation now moves beyond the individual dispute between Trump and several news organizations.

At the center of the legal battle is a broader question: Can a presidential administration restrict journalists’ access to the White House because officials object to their reporting?

The courts will ultimately determine the legal questions raised by the lawsuit.

For now, the immediate consequence is striking: the major television networks have chosen not to simply step into CNN’s scheduled position, leaving the White House TV pool without a replacement camera crew for the president’s designated pool events.

And as CNN, MS NOW and Politico take their fight to court, the dispute could become one of the most significant press-access battles of Trump’s second term.
