Danielle Smith Breaks Down During Emotional Alberta Referendum Forum

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith became emotional and appeared close to tears during a virtual forum Saturday as she discussed the frustrations many Albertans have with Canada’s federal government.

Smith spoke about farmers, young families struggling with housing costs, rising grocery prices and high utility bills, saying many Albertans feel increasingly frustrated and unheard by Ottawa.

The emotional moment came as Smith argued against Alberta separating from Canada, despite supporting a referendum that will allow voters to address the province’s future relationship with the country.

Alberta’s Oct. 19 referendum includes a question on whether the province should remain in Canada or proceed toward another binding vote on beginning the legal process of separation.

Smith said she believes Alberta can achieve more by remaining at the table with Ottawa, pointing to recent cooperation with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government on energy issues and a potential West Coast pipeline.

Her comments come as the separation debate continues to divide opinion in Alberta, with Smith acknowledging that support for separation remains significant even as polling has suggested continued support for staying in Canada.
