Fico Warns of Growing Risk of Direct NATO-Russia Conflict

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has warned that the war in Ukraine could move toward a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia.

In a video message on September 19, Fico argued that what he described as the West’s strategy of defeating Russia through support for Ukraine had failed. He claimed that some Western politicians may now be seeking to provoke a direct NATO-Russia conflict.

Fico said Slovakia should not be drawn into such a conflict and reiterated that his government would not send Slovak soldiers to fight Russia.

His comments come as European leaders continue to warn about Russian hybrid attacks while debates intensify over how NATO should respond to threats connected to the war.

Fico’s remarks have added another layer to the growing disagreement within Europe over military support for Ukraine and the risk of a wider conflict.

The key question now is whether the war can remain contained to Ukraine—or whether tensions between Russia and NATO will continue to escalate.
