Macron Pushes Back After Trump Map Shows French Territory Under U.S. Flag

French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed that Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is French territory after a map shared by U.S. President Donald Trump showed the small North Atlantic archipelago under the U.S. flag.

Speaking after arriving in Saint-Pierre, Macron said there was no question about the territory’s status, describing it as French and closely connected to France. He added that France would not need to repeat its position every day simply because “people have strange ideas or say strange things.”

Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is France’s only remaining territory in North America and lies just off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The archipelago has roughly 5,800 residents and remains under French sovereignty.

Trump’s map, posted earlier this month, showed a much larger area—including Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico and parts of the Caribbean—covered by the U.S. flag. The image prompted reactions from several countries and renewed attention on questions surrounding sovereignty and U.S. relations with its neighbors.

Macron’s visit also carries a broader diplomatic message. He is meeting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the archipelago as France and Canada discuss closer cooperation on energy, trade and relations with the European Union.

The episode has turned a small territory in the North Atlantic into the center of a much larger conversation about borders, sovereignty and relations between the United States, France and Canada.
