Man Drives Onto Sidewalk Near White House, Demands to Speak With Trump
A security scare unfolded near the White House on Saturday after a man allegedly drove his vehicle onto a sidewalk near Lafayette Square and repeatedly demanded to speak with President Donald Trump.
The incident happened around noon near the intersection of 16th Street and H Street NW, close to the White House security perimeter. Secret Service officers, Metropolitan Police Department personnel and military members quickly responded to the scene.
The driver was taken into custody as authorities secured the area and searched his vehicle. Nearby roads were temporarily closed as a precaution while officers assessed the situation.
According to the Secret Service, the vehicle search produced no dangerous materials. The man was later transported to a nearby hospital for a mental health evaluation. His identity and the circumstances that allegedly led him to drive onto the sidewalk have not been publicly released.
Trump was not at the White House during the incident. He was reportedly at Camp David in Maryland.
