Trump Withdraws Nominee to Lead ICE, Leaving Agency Without Senate-Confirmed Director

WASHINGTON — The White House has withdrawn President Donald Trump’s nomination of former Oklahoma state trooper Lance Schroyer to become director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The withdrawal was announced Thursday, September 17, without the White House providing a reason. Schroyer had been nominated by Trump in June, but his nomination had not received a confirmation hearing in the Senate.

The nomination had stalled in the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Committee Chairman Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., had said he wanted information from the Department of Homeland Security regarding investigations into civilian deaths during ICE enforcement operations before moving forward with a hearing.

Trump had previously described Schroyer as having extensive law-enforcement experience and urged the Senate to confirm him.

The decision means ICE remains without a Senate-confirmed director. David Venturella is currently serving as acting director, and the administration has not announced when it will nominate another candidate.

The development comes as ICE continues to play a central role in the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement agenda and faces increased scrutiny over its operations.
