Supreme Court Blocks Trump’s Mail-Voting Plan as USPS Halts New System
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected the Trump administration’s effort to allow new restrictions on mail-in voting to take effect before the 2026 midterm elections. The ruling means states can continue sending mail ballots under their existing procedures.
The decision has now been followed by another development: the U.S. Postal Service has stopped work on a computer system that was being developed to implement Trump’s plan. Postmaster General David Steiner confirmed Thursday that the project has been halted following the court’s ruling.
Trump’s March executive order called for a system involving state voter eligibility lists and new requirements for mail-ballot envelopes. The administration argued the changes were intended to strengthen election procedures.
The Supreme Court’s September 14 decision prevents the new requirements from being enforced for this year’s midterms. Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas publicly dissented, while Justice Brett Kavanaugh indicated the issue could potentially return to the court in the future.
With mail voting already underway in some states, the USPS says the 2026 election will continue under established procedures rather than the new rules.
