Reporters Denied White House Access After Trump Bans 3 Outlets
The Trump administration has begun enforcing a ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico at the White House, with reporters from all three organizations denied entry on Saturday, September 19.
CNN White House reporter Betsy Klein, MS NOW correspondent Akayla Gardner, and Politico reporter Cheyenne Haslett were among those turned away. Their press credentials were reportedly deactivated or confiscated as they attempted to enter the White House grounds.
President Donald Trump announced the restrictions a day earlier, accusing the three outlets of publishing what he described as “fake news.” He said the decision was based on what he characterized as a pattern of coverage over the past several years, rather than pointing to one specific report.
The three organizations have rejected the move and indicated they could pursue legal action, arguing that the restrictions interfere with their constitutional rights and ability to report on the administration.
The White House Correspondents’ Association also called for the reporters’ access to be restored, arguing that journalists should be able to scrutinize government officials regardless of whether officials approve of their coverage.
The dispute is now setting up another major confrontation between the Trump administration and the U.S. news media, with potential legal challenges likely to determine how far the White House can go in restricting press access.
What do you think — should the White House be able to restrict access for news outlets it considers unfair, or should reporters retain access regardless of their coverage?
