“Things Are Going to Get Ugly”: Republicans Face Growing Concerns Ahead of the Midterms
With the 2026 U.S. midterm elections now just weeks away, some Republicans are becoming increasingly concerned about the party’s chances of maintaining control of Congress.
A September 18 report by HuffPost said Republican candidates in districts and states that strongly backed Donald Trump in 2024 have begun adjusting their campaigns as Democrats gain momentum in several national polls. Republican strategists are also directing significant financial resources toward races once considered relatively safe.
The concerns come as Democrats show an advantage in several recent national congressional preference polls. A September Economist/YouGov survey of 1,461 registered voters found Democrats ahead of Republicans 49% to 38% on the generic congressional ballot.
Economic issues are also playing a major role. Recent polling and election analysis have highlighted voter concerns over inflation, gas prices and the broader cost of living. These issues could become particularly important as voters evaluate the party controlling the White House and Congress.
Republicans are also facing difficult Senate races. The party currently holds a 53–47 Senate majority, meaning Democrats would need to gain four seats to take control. Recent reporting has identified several traditionally competitive or Republican-leaning states as potential battlegrounds.
Still, polls conducted several weeks before Election Day are not final outcomes. Campaigns, turnout, late-breaking events and individual races can all change the political landscape before voters cast their ballots.
With control of both chambers of Congress potentially at stake, the final weeks of the 2026 campaign are shaping up to be closely watched across the country.
