‘Time for Me to Come Home’: How a Familiar Face Sparked the Chiefs’ Offensive Revival
The Kansas City Chiefs are finding new ways to make their offense more effective, and a familiar face is part of the story.
The headline points to Eric Bieniemy, who returned to Kansas City in January 2026 for his second stint as offensive coordinator. Having previously worked with head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Bieniemy brings valuable experience and familiarity with the team’s offensive system.
Bieniemy served as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 through 2022, a period in which Kansas City consistently ranked among the NFL’s most productive offenses. After leaving the team, he worked with Washington, UCLA and the Chicago Bears before returning to Kansas City.
But the Chiefs’ offensive improvement is about more than bringing back a familiar coach.
Recent reporting highlights another significant adjustment: using Mahomes more frequently under center rather than operating primarily from the shotgun formation.
The change is designed to strengthen the running game and create more opportunities for play-action passes. With defenses forced to respect the run, Mahomes can have more opportunities to find receivers downfield.
The arrival of running back Kenneth Walker has also contributed to the new approach, giving Kansas City another way to challenge opposing defenses.
The results have been encouraging. The Chiefs have demonstrated greater balance between rushing and passing, making it more difficult for opponents to concentrate on stopping just one part of their offense.
Still, questions remain about how the offense will perform against stronger defenses and how injuries to key receivers could affect the team’s progress.
For Kansas City, the goal is to build an offense that can adapt when opponents take away its first option.
The big question: Is the Chiefs’ offensive revival a sign that Kansas City has found the right formula again, or will tougher opponents expose weaknesses?
